Constitutes the fourth part, first issue of the first Latin edition of Theodor de Bry's Great voyages, printed in fourteen parts, in Latin, German, French, and English, in Frankfurt am Main, Oppenheim, and Hanau from 1590-1644, and the Elenchus, an outline of the thirteen Latin parts, published by Matthias Merian in Frankfurt am Main in 1634
This work has been identified as the first issue of the first Latin edition of the Great voyages by Church
Imprint from colophon
The Roman numeral dates on title pages are made with backwards C's
The first issue of Latin part four can be identified by the title page proper printed with the mispelled word "prevelegio" and without the "Ad invistis Rudolphus II. Rom. imperator"; on the fully engraved title page which precedes the plates, p. [4-5], 3rd count, the word "prevelegio" has been poorly reprinted as "privelegio", with the first "e' still somewhat visible and having "Ad invistis Rudolphus II. Rom. imperator" printed beween "cive Francofurtensi anno M D XCIIII" and "Cum prevelegio S. C. Maiestat"
Latin translation, by Urbain Chauveton, of book one of: Historia del Mondo Nuovo / by Girolamo Benzoni, first printed Venice, 1565, which was first printed in Latin, Geneva, 1578, under title: Novae Novi Orbis historiae
Despite this being a translation of book one only, as is identified on p. 11, 2nd count, the running title reads: Americae liber IIII and on p. 145 the last line of text erroneously reads: "Finis libri qvarti"
Colophon reads: Impressvm Francofovti ad Moenvm, Typis Ioannis Feyrabend, impensis Theodori de Bry. Anno M. D. LXXXXIIII
This part contains the beginning of Girolamo Benzoni's Historia del Mondo Nuovo. The remainder was published in the parts V and VI. Benzoni's work was first published in Italian at Venice in 1565. It was translated into Latin by Urbain Chauveton. He also translated the work into French. De Bry has followed Chauveton's translation which was published at Geneva in 1578, and has added to it Latin translations of some of the notes which appeared in the French edition. Cf. Church
